Q: Can you tell us a little bit about what your role at Retail by CRS and what your typical day looks like?

A: Well my title is a little deceiving, as it doesn’t really begin to cover the things I do on a day-to-day basis. While I do handle sales and marketing for the company, I also deal with many different administrative tasks, tech support questions, new implementation projects, training our merchants on their new POS systems, procuring hardware and software licenses, building online Shopify stores, and so much more! There is no such thing as a “typical” day for me – every single day is different, and that’s one of the best parts of my role. It’s impossible to get bored when you’re pulled in a bunch of different directions!

Q: Outside of your work life, what kind of things are you interested in? Do you have any hobbies or side projects that you’re passionate about?

A: Outside of work, I like to get crafty and creative – I have a not-so-secret love for miniature things, especially creating my own. It’s incredibly satisfying to create an every day object in a tiny scale. I also really enjoy reading mystery novels and almost always have a book on the go. As for side projects, I sometimes help out friends (and friends of friends) with their business websites. I love the challenge of putting together a cohesive online presence for different industries I would’ve never been able to get involved with otherwise.

Another thing I really enjoy outside of work is watching live theatre. I see more live shows than I do movies and I always see them with my mom. Her and I have always shared a love for plays, so any opportunity we get to go see one together, we take it (even if it’s the same show we’ve already seen year after year).

Q: What inspired you to pursue your career path and what kind of advice would you give to someone aspiring to be in your field?

A: I’ve always been in some sort of sales role and it’s all because of my dad. For as long as I could remember, he’s always been in sales – whether it be selling meat, cell phone sales or home sales – and I just naturally gravitated towards the same path. My first sales role was in new home sales, and after about 5 years of that, I moved from the show homes to the head office, where my attention to detail made me a great candidate for underwriting purchase contracts. Now I continue to remain in an office-type role but with my hand always kept in the sales side of things.

The advice I would give to someone aspiring to be in a sales role is to be genuine. Yes, you want to make an impression and say the right things to gain a sale, but being your genuine self while you do those things is the difference between being an okay salesperson and being a successful salesperson. The relationship you build with your prospective clients is EVERYTHING, and people can generally tell when a person is being genuine and when they aren’t.

Q: If you could swap roles with someone for just one day – either within the company or outside of the industry – what would it be and why?

A: Throughout my 20’s I had an obsession with indoor plants, and for a while there, I had a dream of opening my own plant store someday. Considering the role I am in now, along with the dream I once had, I think it would be cool to swap roles with a retail store owner. It would be interesting to get a first hand look at exactly how operating a retail store is done and get to experience the highs and lows of it for myself. I think it would be really beneficial for my current role to have that kind of knowledge.

Q: Tell us a surprising fact about you that your coworkers don’t already know.

A: I’m much more adventurous and thrill seeking than I seem. I come off as quiet and reserved (and anxious…always anxious LOL), but I’m not afraid of trying new and scary things. I love to go quadding in challenging terrain, I’ve repelled off of mountain cliffs, I’ve done real rock climbing on the side of a mountain, I’ve been zip lining hundreds of feet above river banks, I’ve done white water canoeing in dangerous rapids, and I’ll go the scariest roller coasters (even if I’m terrified to the point of tears while waiting in line). The funny thing is, I can do all of these adrenaline seeking things, but something like being in an overly crowded/loud place will send me running the other way.
