Q: Can you tell us a little bit about what your role at Canadian Retail Solutions and what your typical day looks like?
A: My role as a point-of-sale solutions specialist for retailers and restaurants is to provide different solutions that optimize and simplify clients’ operations. I love being in this role because every client is unique. Even though we often talk about the same type of businesses, you realize that each one has its own particularity and essence. My day-to-day is very active—contacting new prospects, following up with existing clients, giving product demonstrations according to their needs, networking locally, and attending industry-related events. You never get bored in this profession because you are always creating strategies, talking to new people, and going from one place to another to help business owners.
Q: Outside of your work life, what kind of things are you interested in? Do you have any hobbies or side projects that you’re passionate about?
A: I do a little bit of everything. I enjoy reading manga, watching anime, and playing video games with my 5-year-old daughter (I need to practice more because she always beats me). When I decided to move from Latin America to Canada, I set myself the goal of learning how to snowboard. Even though I had never done it at a young age, I managed to learn enough not to fall too often. I love doing this every winter. My family enjoys watching me do it, as my wife says she doesn’t want to break a bone.
Q: What inspired you to pursue your career path and what kind of advice would you give to someone aspiring to be in your field?
A: My mom inspired me to pursue a career in this field. She is the owner of a salon in the Dominican Republic and watching her talk to people while doing their hair, and how she could create designs and add color just by listening to them, is art to me. If you easily connect with people, enjoy listening, and at the same time, put yourself in others’ shoes to understand them better, while persevering even when you hear the word “No” many times, then you are ready for this career.
Q: If you could swap roles with someone for just one day – either within the company or outside of the industry – what would it be and why?
A: If I could change my role for a day, I would love to be the owner of a restaurant dedicated exclusively to BBQ. One of the things Dominicans are best at is grilling BBQ, and being able to bring that flavor to Edmonton and see how it could be received by the public would be a wonderful experience. The restaurant industry is one of the most risky businesses out there, so owning a restaurant is not as easy as one might think. My comfort is that my wife says I would succeed because she truly enjoys family BBQs in summer!
Q: Tell us a surprising fact about you that your coworkers don’t already know.
A: A surprising fact about me that none of my coworkers have ever known is that I had a small online store called Sirius Telescopio dedicated to the sale, rent, and repair of telescopes and binoculars. Furthermore, I used to sell accessories and clothing, as well as collectible action figures like Star Wars. I also organized night observation events for families who wanted to come to my house to observe significant events in space. I hope that one day I can open a store like that, but this time a physical one in my new home, called Canada.
